Immunizations
at Sheldon’s Express Pharmacy
At Sheldon's Express Pharmacy, our pharmacists administer the flu and
pneumonia shots each year as a service to our customers. We customarily
administer shots in October and November each year.
Flu shots
Vaccination against influenza is strongly recommended for high-risk groups,
such as children and the elderly. Every year the influenza virus changes and
different strains become dominant. Because of the high mutability of the virus
each vaccine formulation usually only is effective for about a year. It’s good to
get flu shots annually to guard against that year’s most prevalent flu strains.
Pneumonia
The Pneumonia vaccination is very important for preventing pneumonia for both
children and adults. Vaccinations against pneumonia in the first year of life has
significantly reduced pneumonia in children. Vaccinating children against
Streptococcus pneumonia has also led to a fewer of these infections in adults
because many adults acquire infections from children. It is recommended for
all healthy individuals older than 65 and any adults with emphysema, congestive
heart failure, diabetes mellitus, cirrhosis of the liver, alcoholism, cerebrospinal
fluid leaks, or those who do not have a spleen. You may also require a repeat
vaccine after five or ten years.
